Adding a Link to Mr Linky

You may have seen, as you move around the blogworld, posts which invite you to participate in a particular theme where you write a post on your own blog and then add a link to that post on the host blog.

One such example of this is the “Smiley Saturday” that I host on Lightening Online.

These can be a LOT of fun to participate in and can also be a way of generating some extra traffic to your blog.

Most hosts with Mr Linky’s ask that participants link directly to their post when using the Mr Linky.

Why does it matter whether or not I link directly to my post?

The person who is most set to benefit from getting this right is you.

Not every person reads a blog every day.

Let’s say someone reads my Smiley Saturday post on a Wednesday. Interested in reading other Smiley Saturday posts they click on some of the links left via my Mr Linky.

IF your Mr Linky link takes them to your home page, the Smiley Saturday post you wrote on Saturday may well have become buried by 3 or 4 (or more) posts that you have written since.

You DO NOT WANT a visitors first experience on your blog to be one of frustration because they cannot find what they’re looking for.

Sadly, some people choose to abuse the Mr Linky system by using it to link to their blog even if they are not participating in the theme being offered. For this reason, some Mr Linky hosts will automatically delete links that are directed at a home page rather than a specific post.

What Do You Mean By Linking Directly to My Post?

Here is what a link looks like that directs people to the home page of your blog:

How Do I Find Out What the Link Direct To My Post Is?

The first thing you need to do is write AND publish your post.

As it is your most recent post, it will most likely show up at the top of your homepage. If you look at the URL in your browser it will look something like the first link I showed you above. Which is the URL for your blog.

Now click on the heading for the post you want to link to.

The URL in your browser should now look something like this:

* note: not ALL links look exactly like this one but there should be SOMETHING listed after your blog URL that makes it unique from every other blog page.

It should simply be a matter of copying and pasting THAT URL into the Mr Linky box and whenever anyone clicks on your name in the list, they will be taken STRAIGHT to the post they are expecting to find.

As always, if you have any questions or problems, please feel free to ask. Smile
