Entrecard Blog Review: From the Old
From the Old is a blog covering blogging and other internet related information. Articles that can be found there include selling your post through the title and an interesting and informative article on the importance of title, post, tag and meta data for ranking in search engines.
What I Like About This Blog
- The blogger has stuck with the classic colours of black, white and red making the blog easy to read and not hit you with a huge mass of colour.
- There is a clear and easy to find RSS icon giving you options of subscribing via a feed or subscribing via email.
- The header is clickable, making it easy to find “home”.
- There is a search option which is right at the top so easy to find.
- Major categories have been listed as tabs which I think encourages browsing and gives an idea at a glance of the types of things talked about on the blog.
What I Would Do Differently If This Were My Blog?
- I feel there are too many ads above the fold. From my point of view as a visitor, none of the ad headlines caught my eye because I was blasted with too many all at once. I think this could be counter-productive given that google mostly pays per click. Having to scroll down before I could see ANY content on the site was a little off-putting. If you want to pick up fly-by visitors, you really need to give them a reason to stay.
- I couldn’t find an About page. One of the things I enjoy about blogging is the connection with the person writing the blog. The absence of an about page (or having it buried so that it is hard to find) made the site that little less personal. At the very least, a small “welcome” message at the top of the sidebar would give the site a more personal touch.
- The Advertise page could have a little more information added to it (and yes, I need to take this advice right here on this blog - I’m a work in progress too!). Why do you feel your site is worth an advertiser paying $125 a month to advertise? A couple of lines that “sell” the site might be worthwhile. I couldn’t find any information anywhere that gave me an indication of the traffic for the site, alexa or google rankings or anything that might convince me of the value of advertising there.
Edited to Add: Since completing this review, From the Old has another post up which I really feel is worth mentioning. 10 Reasons To Get Blogging. Being a big fan of the benefits of blogging (and there ARE many), this post really appealled to me. It’s worth a read.

Thanks for the great review.
I agree what you said about the ads.
The about page is just one thing I cannot make up my mind what I want to put there.
