Windows Live Writer
I have been playing around with Windows Live Writer in recent times, in preparation for blogging on the road. Here are my observations of the software to date:
- You can write pretty much the same way you do in your blogging window and prepare everything ready to go. This includes images and links.
- It takes a little bit of getting used to. It’s surprising how much the brain associates visually with composing a blog post. I still find it unfamiliar to try and compose a post in the Windows Live Writer program as I’m used to composing directly into my blogging program.
- I’ve yet to use it completely off-line. To do so would require me to be organised in advance in terms of links etc. Although links could also be added last minute before publishing (you do have to be online to publish).
- You can add links, tags, images etc to your post directly in that program. The images do come out slightly differently to ones that are uploaded directly in your blog but other than that, this function works really well. You can see an example of images from Windows Live Writer in this post on netball.
- You can save what you’re writing as a draft so posts can be partially written and also can be saved until you get internet access.
- You can set up a number of blogging accounts and switch between them easily.
- You can post your draft to your blog and edit it from there before publishing. This would allow you to write your copy offline. Post it to your drafts folder on your blog and then go and pre-publish for another date.
- You can also preview your post so that you can see what it will look like when published to your blog.
It’s a pretty handy little program really. Well worth downloading and getting used to using. No doubt there are functions available that I’m yet to learn as this is only my second post written using the program (and this time I wrote half then sent it as a draft to my blog program to finish off so it’ll be published from within the blog rather than direct from Windows Live Writer).
Anyone else use Windows Live Writer and how do you find it?

I have used it but for text purposes only. I prefer to transfer to the blog window and then do the linking etc. It is however a good program and I am just too used to my old ways I think!
I can’t get used to live writer, I’d much prefer to just use my wordpress for blog writing. If thats not available then word is fine too.

Sound like Windows Live Writer has been made to order for bloggers on the move. I know the frustration of writing in MS Word and then tryingto get the post to look the same in the blog. This I suppose it the solution.
